Solar Energy Programmes - Solar Photovoltaic
The mankind is looking at the diminishing conventional energy resources like coal, natural gas and fuels like kerosene, diesel, petrol, etc. With increased concern, they look back to SUN, which is the source of unlimited energy, for an unlimited and dependable solution. The SUN, is the best source of energy and this realization lead to the discovery of Solar Powered Equipment. Solar Energy is Pollution free, eco-friendly and freely available. At this juncture it is not out of place to inform that the available total solar energy is 180 billion MW.
There are two technologies in Solar Energy they are SPV Technology and Thermal Technology.
Solar Energy is converted into electrical energy through Solar Photovoltaic Cells. It is only a scientific phenomenon that light can produce electricity when it falls on certain substance. The Phenomenon is known as Photo voltaic (PV). The production of electricity from sunlight is called Solar Photo Voltaic (SPV) when sunlight falls on cells made of these substances (example Silicon), electricity is produced. This can be either directly used or stored in batteries for later use to light lamps or to operate equipments.
There are different gadgets/systems/devices working on this principle and few are hereby detailed as prima facie:
  1. Solar Lanterns.
  2. Solar Home Lighting Systems – Model – I to Model-V
  3. Solar Street Lighting Systems
  4. Solar Water Pumping Systems
  5. Solar Power Plants/Power Packs. Etc.
Solar Lanterns: It is a very handy/petty and can be carried / used in both indoors and out door. These devices/systems are best alternative to Kerosene Lamps, Gas lamps and conventional emergency lights. A Photovoltaic Module charges the battery fitted in the lantern during day time. The lantern provides light during the night minimum 2 to 4 hours. Different models are available with various configurations to suit the requirements of Customers/Enthusiastic users in the cost range of Rs.1400 to Rs. 4,000 in the market. The MNRE suggested Model - IIA consists of 10W SPV Module, 7W CFL, 12V 7Ah battery.
Solar Home Lighting Systems: These systems are feasible in interior areas wherein there is no electricity supply and can be used daily 4 to 5 hours under emergency circumstances and can be fixed on convenient walls. Under Solar Home Lighting Systems Model - 1 to 5 are available with following configurations:

MNRE Subsidy to all individuals and non-profitable organizations Rs.2,500/- Rs.4,800/- Rs.4,800/- Rs.4,800/- Rs.4,800/-
The target sanctioned/allotted by MNRE under SPV 2007-08 Programme for Solar Home Lighting Systems - Model II to IV is 150 Nos. and are to be accomplished on or before 30.06.08 or any other extended date by MNRE.
Solar Street Lighting System: Solar Street Lighting System is having dusk to dawn facility i.e., Automatic on and off. The main spares/components in Solar Street Lighting System are as follows:
  1. Solar Photo Voltaic Module - 74 W
  2. Tubular low Maintenance Battery Capacity - 12 V 75 Ah
  3. Weather Proof Luminary 11 W CFL
  4. Electronic Components
  5. 2.5” diameter, 4 meters GI Pole
  6. Battery Box and other hardware materials.
Approximate cost of the Solar Street Lighting System is Rs.24,000/-
MNRE CFA/Subsidy is available to Govt. Departments and Non-Commercial Organisations:
Under SPV 2007-08 Programme Rs.9,600/-
Under UICA for Urban Municipalities Rs.10,000/-
The copy of Sale Price, Eligible subsidy and Net Sale Price/Ben. Share particulars sheet is hereby enclosed. The SPV Programme year wise target and achievement details from the programme year 2004-05.
Solar Water Pumping Systems: A Solar Photovoltaic Water Pumping System consists of a DC/AC surface mounted/submersible/floating motor pump set, electronics if any, interconnect cables, an on-off switch and a PV array mounted on a suitable structure with a provision of tracking. Storage batteries will not constitute a part of the SPV Water Pumping System. The SPV Water Pumping System should be operated with a PV array in the range of 200 watts - 3000 watts, measured under standard test conditions. Sufficient no. of modules in series and parallel will be used to obtain the required PV array current, voltage and power output. The power output of individual PV modules used in the PV array, under STC, should be a minimum of 75 watts, with adequate provision for measurement tolerances. Use of PV MODULES with high power output is encouraged. In case of thin film solar cell modules, the specified value of output power refer to the power output achieved after the initial degradation. The Solar PV Water Pumping System should provide a minimum of 77 liters of water per watt of PV array used per day under average daily solar radiation conditions of 5.5Kwh/Sq.m on a horizontal surface, from a total head of 10 meters (Suction head up to a maximum of 7 meters). In case of deep well submersible pumps, the water requirement should be a minimum of 25 liters of water per watt of PV array capacity used per day from a total depth of 30 meters . Use of a tracking system to enhance the availability of Solar Radiation to lift desired quantity of water is permitted. Following type of motor pump sets are permitted to be used in the SPV Water Pumping Systems:
  1. Surface mounted DC motor pump set
  2. DC submersible motor pump set
  3. AC submersible motor pump set
  4. Dc floating motor pump set
The SPV Pump Programme will support deployment of SPV Water Pumping Systems for various water lifting applications, specially the community drinking water supply and agriculture and related uses such as irrigation, horticulture, animal husbandry, poultry farming, high value crops, orchards, silviculture, aquaculture, salt farming etc., SPV Pumping systems for community applications such as drinking water are to be given priority over the individuals. MNRE will provide financial assistance (FA) to users of the SPV Water Pumping Systems at the rate of Rs.30/- per watt peak of the Photovoltaic array used with the water pumping system subject to a maximum of Rs.50,000/- per system. Further, SPV systems for community applications such as drinking water are to be given priority over the individuals.
